    Sooty thermostat housing

I removed the thermostat housing in this new to me 1970's late model A4 and found black soot inside the housing and adjacent block. Is that normal? Where would soot come from? I spent a few hours searching the archives and can't find mention of this.

I bought the boat and started a 1-yr refit, so I have not run it on the water, but we ran it up on the hard and did compression checks, and all seems fine. Did not come up to operating temp though (no thermostat!).

Update: I just noticed this comment in Don's list of critical rebuild points: "Check the floor of the cooling water jacket in late model heads, directly below the thermostat housing opening for the presence of a small pin hole (in a location that is just slightly under the edge of the head gasket). These holes can be repaired by drilling and tapping for a 1/8" pipe plug." - Any relevance?

The black soot is most likely residue from bio-growth in the raw water that
grew over the long life span of the engine. This condition is not usually
    of any great concern.
