Carb Adjustment Tool

I installed a PCV Valve late last year and still have to fine tune the adjustment of the carburetor. In my enthusiasm to sail yesterday, I kind of forgot about this. Everything was kosher while in the slip. As dictated by Murphy's Law, I was able to get out of the slip and go sailing... but had trouble getting back to the dock. Wind dies about 200 yards from the marina- can't sail in. Hello Sea Tow. Glad it was me and a buddy- rather than me, the wife and daughter. Gotta get this sorted out.

The symptom is this. I can get her started under full choke but as soon as I drop her into gear... the motor dies. Its also idling quite fast but I don't have a tach to tell you just how fast. I was trying to trouble shoot and make the adjustment while on the water yesterday. First thing to try was adjusting the idle mixture needle valve. Full seat and out 2.5 turns- I believe. Stop right there. Is it even possible to turn that screw while the carb is installed. I have the facet fuel pump on there and its right in the way of any tool that I have.

How do you guys do this adjustment?

olodschool, start at 1 1/2 turns off the seat. If it would run before the installation it should still run after albeit a tiny bit lean. You adjustment will be in to richen and out to lean.

You probably have an air leak from the installation, the manifold to carb gasket(s) are the immediate thought and a possible plug left out in an adaptor.

How do I physically make the adjustment with the facet pump in the way? I just can't seem to get at it.

Can you give more description on the 'plug left out of an adapter?' Is that specific to the PCV installation, carb or both. I need to go back and try to find the installation instructions for the PCV.

David, a long skinny screw driver works and you may need a mirror to position it. Don does supply a longer idle jet or do like I do and just feel for it and adjust with my fingers. Kobble something that works for your app, well worth it!!!

If there was a spacer in your kit it may have more than one port. The gasket must be in place correctly with the bolts through the bolt holes in the gaskets. I have many times trouble shot and found the gasket to be sticking out the backside and causing a vac leak.

Is the PCV kit an INDIGO?
You're very likely running way too lean.
When you shift into gear (put a load on) it'll stall.

If the fuel pump is obstructing your access to the carb it is possible to move the fuel pump to a better position on a bulkhead.

If you mount the pump off the engine, note the Coast Guard requirement (33 CFR Subpart J, Fuel Systems, pg 81) that the pump be no farther than 12" from the engine. I believe Dave Neptune kindly added this document to the ABYC and USCG Standards Forum. There is no length restriction from the pump to the carb.
With less vibration and heat, off-engine mounting should be better for the pump.

if you mount pump off engine you will need to ground pump also.
