Engine shutdown
I had been having an problem with my A4 shutting down after about an hour of motoring. Generally what happens is that the engine would suddenly decrease in RPM and stall. It was possible to keep the engine running be immediately putting the transmission into neutral, but placing it back into gear would cause the engine to begin dying again. After dying the engine would not restart for 30-40 minutes.
We have Electronic Ignition and an electronic fuel pump. Using the shut down checklist I seemed to narrow the problem down to a weak spark coming out of the coil to the distributor. I replaced the coil and the engine appears to be running fine. Has anyone else run into this problem with a coil failing when it gets hot? Or am I missing something? Thanks, Mike Annapolis |
