Finally Got Wet!

Launched Fri 5 Aug and got the stick up just at nightfall. Today ran outside the harbor and A4 is healthy. The Dave Neptune prop will take some getting used to because I have never reached 2500 rpms at cruising speed until now. I was especially impressed by how smooth it is even though a two blader - runs very true. Plenty of "dig" too for running against current and wind. Look out Georgia currents; here I come!

Back home in the water. She is looking superb and running like a champ. Good job and congratulations. If boats could smile I know yours is. Having the same boat I assure you it is the most beautiful one around.

Dan - I really want to keep in touch with the forum but not sure how to do it. I live on the hook most of the time. I have heard that a cell phone can be used to make an internet connection but I need to get some advice about this. My daughter said she can give me an old lap top with Vista software. One way or the other I'll figure out a way to do this. I have a little time to work on this since departure is planned in October. Hanley

Hanley,

Last year when I was working in the Arctic some of the guys had "air cards". They were the best and those that had them were always in touch. I have a Blackberry and it did OK but I was wishing I had an air card at that time.

Around home here my blackberry works well but again, I haven't used it much. I take my computer and blackberry as they are plug and play. You can get some really good packages and mine is with Bell. They have towers everywhere and I am rarely out of a service area. Here in the big C (Canada) there are allot of service carriers but the service areas can be sparse and it's just as well to have nothing if it doesn't have service.

I'd look into the "Air Card"...because they go to satellite and can work from anywhere. In a few years the whole system will work like that...me thinks.

I use http://www.virginmobileusa.com/mobile-broadband/ when I am in transit. This service is month by month, so when you are done with your travels you let your month expire and only reactive the service when you need it in the future (so you are not stuck paying for months when you don't need it).

This was going to be my advice as well. During our anual Texas 200 trip the leader uses that in sone VERY remote areas of the Texas coast with far better results than any of our cell phones. His is a "Mobile hot spot", which means it connects to the cell tower and then he connects to it via WiFi. The advantage here is he can run that device up his mast in a watertight box and increase his effective range. Pretty cool.

Yeh baby!

Hanley, good to hear the prop is getting the RPM you were looking for. The wider tips on the cut 14" should work fine. I am interested in what you can get into a bit of chop or haedwind. I'm not suprised by the RPM as my D/D was getting 1700 at WOT.
That additional RPM should help your reduction unit as much as the Indigo does the direct drives. The biggest thing I noticed was the additional smoothness the extra RPM's provided.
Hope you can figure how to stay in touch as so many of us are interested in your trip. Also I would like to keep up with how your electric cooling system does after a long run at higher RPM and HP.

She looks great. You weren't long getting the stick up and rigging her. Enjoy your sailing. I took one of the guys advice and downloaded "OpenCNP". It accesses my SeaClear charts and is much easier to deal with...FWIW. Just spent the last hour playing with it and it is nice....would be great for your trip.

Check out the BadBoy Extreme from Bitstorm:

It's essentially a high-powered wireless client with a hi-gain antenna. Using it, you'll be able to find any open wireless access points in the area from a MUCH greater distance than any laptop can. I've got one on my boat and it works great.

One of the options is an additional wifi access point so you can rebroadcast in your boat and access things from your laptop's wifi without stringing any ethernet cables.

It is a bit pricy, but it sure works nice!

Oh, another help in keeping in tough is SPOT. I recently got the Delormy PN60 with SPOT. This is different than before in that you can send a message typed out on the GPS, instead of the previous "One message fits all". If you have no need of a new GPS, they also have it for pairing with a smart phone...same capabilities.

You can't post to a forum of course but you can email, SMS, etc.

Red face Beware the Assumption

So I go out and recheck the lifters while on the mooring. Had to make a few adjustments of .002" or less. Reinstalled the carb (I had jostled it a bit) and couldn't keep her running. Well, I thought, just a little bowl cleanup and I'll be good to go. This is why I keep a spare carb on board ready to go.

Yes Sir Hanley,

Some easy to have trouble. The other day I was sitting in the cockpit having a beer and thinking what I should be puttering at.....because the marine gremlins are always working in the background, whether it's rust, debris, or ignition problems they work hard to keep us on our toes. Better to deal with that now than underway...and now that you mention it I should look at my valve clearances also....gremlin could have been in there too.

Angry Ouch KRAP

Hanley. I can see how the bowl and the innards could be corrupted by what appears to be water sediment damage~deposits. However I do have a concern as to how the air corrector in the "throat" of the carb got so much of a deposit. I find that a bit disturbing espaecailly if you have any water encroaching on the "intake side" of the carb .
Is that the carb you got the 2500 RPM's out of on the test prop?

Yes, that carb gave me 2500 rpms a few days ago and I could have gotten more. How that well vent was still operating is anybody's guess...I'm just glad it happened on the mooring.

Question Some info

Hanley, did you notice a rich reading on your O2 sensor? If the well vent is even plugged a tiny bit it would richen the heck out of it and could possibly even flood the engine. I'm amazed at the 2500.

Did there happen to be any signs of water in the spark arrestor?
