Loud tapping noise from reversing gear area

I've recently developed a fairly loud uniform tapping noise from the reversing gear area. It occurs when the prop shaft turns in gear or not. I first noticed it when sailing with the motor off and the transmission in neutral. The shaft was turning and making the noise. I yanked on the shaft at the coupler and noticed no play. The noise goes away when in gear at higher rpm's. It makes the noise when in gear at low rpm's or in neutral when I spin the shaft by hand. Any ideas?
