Shaft seal on a Sherwood Water Pump

The A4 on our venerable C&C Corvette has a Sherwood water pump, which I am rebuilding. I need confirmation that A, the Sherwood has only 1 shaft seal, and B, the steel side faces out agaist the motor. It would appear to me that the steel side should be pressed until flush with the mounting plate. Although a press fit, should any sealant be used to make the outside edge of the seal impervious to water seepage? Can I coat the impellor with grease prior to installation?

Thanks

Erwin
