How much wear on pump shaft
Hi
I had a leaky seal on my Oberdorfer203M. I pulled the pump and dissasembled. I wanted to know how much wear is too much for a pump to be rebuildable. There is some wear on the shaft and within the pump housing. I put the good end of the shaft into the pump body and you can tell that the pump housing has been worn very slightly oval....is there anyway to tell how much is too much??? Thanks Jarod |

Jarod,
When to replace a water pump versus rebuilding is always a tough call, and the decision unfortunately does not lend itself easily to absolute measurements. We recommend that you base your decision to a large extent on the age of your pump. If a pump is 20 years old (or more) and the housing is worn so that the "good" end of the shaft feels loose in the housing, you might invest in a set of new seals, but it's probably better to replace the pump than to invest in all the parts necessary to completely rebuild it. In the case of these older pumps, the inside of the impeller chamber will probably be quite worn, as well as the shaft bore and you'll soon be at the point where performance will be greatly affected. In worst cases, we have received reports where new seals still dripped and where new impellers would not work. Don |
