Magnetic Dip Stick
Magnetic dip stick would be a great addition.
Right now I have a magnet stuck to my oil pan near the dip stick, to catch any stray metal bits, but, removal of the metal bits might be a problem. If the dip stick were magnetic, the bits would come out when you check the oil level.

Good idea Neal but how many of us use an oil plug to drain the oil?
Unfortunately I still drain the oil through the dip stick hole with a hand pump.

Imagine the amount of material that could be extracted through a 3/4" plug compared to the dipstick tube not to mention the greater power magnet that would fit through there.
The designer of the pictured device was nice enough to provide one to me that I have yet to install. This thread is just the motivation I need. Plus, I'd rather draw the oil out the hole designed for it. No more sucking oil out through a soda straw.

I agree that more can be extracted through a bigger hole.
But, I'm wondering, If that much metal, and that size, needs to be extracted, wouldn't you probably have to open the engine to get to the root cause? This has all been prompted by Hanley's metal shavings on his Idler gear...and to a lesser extent, by my spun bearing back in June...for which, to cover my ass, I stuck a magnet to my oil pan to catch any strays that I didn't get during the overhaul. Nonetheless, having one or the other, or both, would be a great piece of mind to help prevent severe damage to the engine. I vote for both though. Good input Neil. Also, about sucking the oil through a straw, I agree. I should have upgraded to the Moyer kit when I had the engine out. Another item on my list now. You just cost me more money Neil!
