compression test while partially disassembled

Hi,

I am planning on completing some minor overhaul projects this winter, but before I invested too much time in my engine, I thought I should do compression test. So I just got a cylinder compression test gauge, but I have already winterized and partially disassembled my engine. Can I still get an accurate reading?

The items I have removed are: carb, fuel pump, manifold, valve coverplate, alternator, starter, flywheel cover. Do I need to reinstall anything before doing the test?

Also, for winterization I have drained all but about a quart of the oil. Is it safe to turn over the engine with the starter or hand crank to do the test with no oil or should I refill the oil first?
