    What the heck is this?

Water in oil saga continues. I'm about one inch from pulling the A4.
In the meantime I run a compression test and pressurized the block. I don't have confidence in either test yet and will redo. I pulled the valve cover off. Just to the right of the right most valve? What the heck is it?
Note I can't see directly so took pictures with flash on

Can you explain WHY you don't have confidence in those tests?

I can't "see" your picture but does it look like a rusted out pipe plug? A few engines have a casting "fix" from the factory as I recall.

Did your tests show maintaining pressure?

      Pics may just help.

Sorry i don't know why the photo didn't post
There is a metallic looking thing by the red arrow...under the rusted spring
This and the plug are for the #4 cylinder.
definitely something going on with #4

Compression test: the motor sounds okay when running
Block pressure test: i think the home depot gauge is leaking

        Almost have the head off

Why do you think that? What evidence is there of a leaky gauge?

At what stage is the head removal? Once the seal of the head gasket is broken or the manifold is removed you can no longer pressure test.

i put the gauge on a short length of hose and it didn't hold pressure.
There are also many reviews on the HD site which state the same

Good point - I only have about half the bolts loosened - the rest are soaking in pb blaster. haven't broken the seal yet. I'll try to test it again. But i think I'm pulling it anyway
This engine is on borrowed time

the picture with the red arrow looks something like a problem that I had. If you do a search using vtbob you can see my water in oil post.
