    Tips for disconnecting propshaft coupling?

I'd like to disconnect my propshaft coupling from the transmission while the boat is in the slip... I'm just trying to avoid the expense of yard fees and haul out... and I don't have an engine to get me to the lift anyway.

I've searched the forum here and the suggestion is to put something in between the prop and hull to prevent the prop from turning as you torque the bolts free. Awesome idea.

That's a problem in a slip. Is it safe to put the propshaft in a vice grip and brace it against the floor? Maybe with a rubber gasket in between the vice and propshaft not to scratch it up...

    I'm open to creative ideas

Assembly currently soaking in PB Blaster.

Hmm actually an impact socket wrench could probably do the trick.

I have used one of those rubber strapped oil filter wrenches with success on mine. I put the strap around the coupling.

I would be very wary of putting anything on the prop shaft itself out of a concern of bending it

My bolts just came out. Having the engine in gear was enough resistance.

I've used a box wrench and just tapped it with a hammer (low cost impact wrench). Avoid adjustable or open end wrenches.

I would use the rubber strap wrench on the coupling if the bolts just don't come right off. Mine were not stuck at all.

Fantastic advice here! I couldn't break them with the engine in gear. But I do have an impact wrench. Came right off with a higher setting.

              Thanks for the suggestions.

I had an issue with reversing gear few years ago and had to remove (and replace) the coupling. No special tools were needed. Here is the thread with some pictures:

Use two wrenches. Let one wrench hit the boat (or a block on the hull) to stop rotation. Then use the other to loosen the bolt. Turn and repeat.
