Carb gasket leaking
Hi guys, I rebuilt my carb using the kit and it appears the gasket is not sealing completely. It looks like the gasket is wet and it has the faint smell of gas. Seems like I saw someone else had the same issue but do not remember what the issue was. Looks like I am going to have to pull it apart and make sure its seating properly.
any ideas,, it runs great. I have attached a pic. thanks Mark |

Mark, many of the carbs are not flat and true on the mating surfaces. The bolts get tightened down and cause a distortion so that the gasket cant seal it.
A fifth bolt was added to the later carbs. Or maybe the 5 bolt carbs are only the replacement ones. I know that Don has addressed this issue. Some guys will use wet sand parer and a flat surface to resurface the mating surfaces. My carb is distorted and I have to put sealant along the joint. Some day I will resurface it.. |

Follow Up
Mark,
I believe that you are referring to my posts/ questions this past summer.( sorry guys- failed to share results......got distracted reading someone's epic thread (HB's), on another forum 😀 I took one last stab at tightening the screws before removing carb to add sealant, and it worked. Not sure if I was gun shy when reassembling carb, or the fuel soaked gasket compressed, allowing a seal on a imperfect surface. I do know access to the screws is a PITA, with the carb installed. Side note- I have added a fume detector, that triggers a audible alarm, and starts blower if any fumes are detected. Small price for big piece of mind. Cheers Jimmy

Care to elaborate on make/model/price, and your experience so far on installing and using it?

Ed
My carb got contaminated with crud, and the needle didn't seat/ close at rest, and subsequently the fuel system drained overnight. I awoke to a boat full of fumes......once is enough of that feeling. After the ( very easy)install, I have frequently tested it both with a paper towel dipped in gas, and a butane lighter. Pleased with the level of sensitivity. For me, this unit doesn't replace safe SOP, but merely enhances it. Details of the unit are below. Purchased it before the loonie took a second kicking this year.... from my local Ships Store. I believe I got away around $250 ------------------------------------------------------------- FireBoy - Xintex Gasoline Fume Detector With Bilge Blower Control Fits 2-1/16" Hole Circuitry Test Item #: 551504 Brand: Fireboy-Xintex Model #: MB-1-R Shipping Weight: 0.85 Lbs. List Price: $284.87 See All Fireboy-Xintex Products View Similar Items Why Buy from Defender? Our Price: $179.99 Single channel gasoline fume detector, with the same features as the m-1: High-tech styling Compact size Circuitry test Alarm horn mute functions Indicator lamp automatically increases in brightness during daylight and softens at night Standard two-inch display unit with gasoline sensor and twenty feet of plug-together lead Can also detect high concentrations of battery hydrogen or engine exhauSt. The mb-1 adds a 10 amp relay to automatically start the bilge blower fan should gasoline fumes be detected. Installation requires only the addition of two wire leads from the control to the blower switch. To test, simply touch the test pad on the control: the red alert lamp will glow, the alarm horn will sound and the blower motor will start. The system works with power requirements of up to ten amps at 12 vdc Cheers,

I second everything Jimmy said including the stuck float valve / boat filled with fumes episode. Here's mine at the nav station:
