Question Are you sure?

Fully one-third of those participating in this poll have indicated that they do have a filter/separator installed, but it's not a Racor. I would have thought that this number would be virtually zero.

If you reported something other than a Racor, would you please describe your filter/separator in some detail? Frankly, I'm wondering whether you really have what you think you do.

Bill

Mine is a Mercury model. Could well be a Racor that has been rebranded I suppose, but I have seen these units at a number of non-marine hardware stores for use with large outboards etc. It does not have the separate clear bowl component at the bottom that I am used to seeing on Racors on Diesel engines. I will likely switch to a Racor if/when this one needs replacing.

Pushing My Luck!

Thanks for the promting!...After 20 yrs. of a trouble free fuel system, I've ordered a RACOR as recommended.
It hasn't arrived yet, so I don't have the installation instructions at this time.
Any advice from experience, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Racor Installation Questions

1)Does the filter have to be located lower than the fuel tank?
2)I posted a question Re: where to locate a new filter, and the list indicates 6 replys. Not sure how to access these?
Thanks, Bill McNamara

Wrong Racor??

I picked up my Racor today, and it looks great. It has the clear bowl for visual inspection, and a neat little stopcock, to easily & safely drain off junk.

Only one problem: The "blurb" says NOT for inboard use??

It was purchased from a (non-boater) Friend's Auto Supply Outlet, so returning it would be no problem, except that it looks so user friendly & safe !!!

Comments Or suggestions?

not for inboard use

Bill,
I may be wrong, but I believe the fuel/water separator for a gasoline inboard must have a metal lower portion. If the base were to break there could be potentially disastrous consequences.

Double Standard?

Yes, I agree, a broken bowl (plastic or metal) would be big trouble for sure!! I'm just a bit confused at this "user friendly" version is OK for outboards and not for (more protected) inboard installations?

Bill,

It's preferable to locate the primary filter lower than the fuel tank since this configuration makes it easier to purge air out of the system after a filter change. However, it is not absolutely necessary to do so or the Catalina 30 fleet (with its fuel tank under the aft berth) would be totally out of luck.

Yes it is necessary to have a metal-bottom for inboard motors. The only time plastic bottoms are allowed is for outboards. I just confirmed this last week when shopping for a new one. I had some fuel system issues that turned out to be a carb issue, and during the troubleshooting I found that my system has an ancient fuel filter assembly, which I will replace with a Racor system before my July 4th cruise!

Fram here on my Islander 28

Been pondering an upgrade, got a bad batch of gas a year ago and still picking up pieces of grit from the carb every so often, even with the Fram.

If bottom of the gas tank is 1 foot above the carb bowl, do I still need a pump? I am thinking I will remove mine.

Steve,

Inlet pressure on our carburetors is listed as 4 psi maximum by Zenith, but I can find no minimum value mentioned. However, our experience has shown that gravity flow from a tank will seldom be sufficient to sustain engine power much above an idle and sometimes not even that.

Fuel Filter

My boat, a 75 Tartan 27 had no fuel filter (or water strainer) for 30 years before I installed them both. Racor fuel filter.

Installed RACOR

I had an ancient PERKO bronze filter with a really weak looking element inside. I purchased the RACOR 320RRAC02 (replacement element S3228UL) from Don's webstore and installed in less than 30 minutes. Was not having problems before; hopefully will stay that way!
