Respiratory Protection...have it!

Today I was at the club working on the boat and couldn't believe the number of people sanding the bottom of the boat without proper respiratory protection. Bottom paint is extremely toxic material and simple dust masks will not protect your lungs.

I had a guy today tell me "oh, I'm just doing this little part" as he used a random orbital sander on his boat's bottom...no mask at all. I handed him a tissue and asked him to blow his nose...all blue. Told him "you may as well have smoked for 20 yrs if you are going to let that in your lungs"....doesn't smoke but doesn't mind inhaling bottom paint....he got the point. So he went in a cleaned his face up and I let him borrow my gear.

Attached is a pic of the Honeywell North system that I use. I use combination cartridges for particles and paint fumes...I find that covers what I have going on around the boat. Very simple but very important.

Helpful link. http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/preve.../respslct.html

I watch the same thing around the yard I'm at. . .people just a merrily sanding away, covered head to toe in biocide. One guy was completely blue from hair to shoes. The only thing flesh colored was where the stream of tears was washing away the dust. I said "I have a mask you can use so you don't breath that crap in". He said he was fine. . .then snorked, hacked, coughed, and spit out a huge blue loogey. . ."See, it comes up!"

I get weird looks when painting because I wear a disposable painters suit and goggles and/or glasses and glove. . .

Oh well, I'm going to help pay for their healthcare anyways. . .why should they care?

Thumbs up

Hey Cool,
I see you are in VA Beach. Worked at VA Beach E/R once. Lived on Hubble Drive up near Dam Neck base.

I don't know if people realize just how toxic it is...

It says right on cigarettes that they will kill you. people still smoke them. I will never figure people out.

Such is life. I want to die suddenly, not slowly.
