Catalina 30 Thru-Hull Replacements

I have a 1978 C30; the old pipe stem thru-hulls always seem to be discussed as an item for replacement. Attached is my approach. This was kind of a first step of engine replacement.

I hope this is useful to others - I gathered the ideas employed from numerous other discussions.

Always open to hearing of better ways.

Good fix. you did a great job.
I don't like holes in the hull for any reason. My boat has several.
I am going to build a fiberglass box around my fittings, with an inspection plate on top. A second fitting will exit the box. If the hull fitting gives way, the incoming water will be confined to the inside of the box.
I will do this when I haul out during the winter.

Looks like you did a fine job. Given the difficulty you had removing the old installation, Catalina must have done a good building job, the real weakness being the gate valves. Our Pearson 35 has one vertical tube extending from the bottom up to the underside of the galley sink and other molded tubes for scupper drainage. So far, insurance has said these tubes are okay as long as they terminate above the waterline. It's probably only a matter of time before this changes and I will have to do what you did, referring to your documentation in the process.

I've posted this before, but here is a great how-to on replacing seacocks and through-hulls.

Here is a primer on the topic.

Thanks to all for the feedback.

Domenic - interesting idea on the box. I note thaqt deck plates are inexpensive. The area around the engine scoop is really crowded - I'll have to think over.

Bill - I wish I had seen your link when I started; I was only starting to learn where forums were, and it took quite some time to nail down what I should do.

The gate valves which I removed were solid - I put a 24" pipe wrench on one and could neither turn it nor bend it out of shape. The nipples were glassed in well - they did not turn when I pulled on the wrench. I hit one with as much force as I could muster with a five pound hammer and it didn't move at all. I used up a lot of small cutting wheels on my rotary tool to cut them out. My experience was far different from what I had read - gate valves "crumbling", pipe nipples falling out of the hull when pushed on by hand, etc. Well, they were solid after 32 years - the intention is to do work that will be solid for another 32 years.

Russell, I had to beat my pipe nipples out too.

To free up some engine room space, I mounted my depth sounder & paddle wheel (I have a Raymarine ST40, our transducers look very similar) under the v-berth in front of the keel.

You did some nice thorough work there!

Looks to me like you've achieved that.
