WOW.
I can't imagine how much work it was to figure out that casting and all the machining required. That is a complex casting. Looks fantastic! I hope you all at Moyer will understand, though, if I say I hope I never need one! But I definitely can see how great this would be if one discovered a cracked block or corrosion through a cylinder wall. Rather than finding an old engine to cannibalize, which just buys you an unknown, here you're starting with brand new, freshly manufactured goods, backed by Moyer. Undoubtedly worth it. Very cool. Congrats!

That's great news! I've been hoping for this for some time. Heard rumors, but never any solid facts.
Congratulations! This should keep the A4 running for at least another 40 years! (Now, if we could just get Don interested in throttle-body fuel injection... )

That would be pretty cool.

Excellent news MMI!

A4 Giant Leap
When you stop to consider that a re-sleeve job is at least $500, a new set of cam bearings installed and fitted is about $200, and many other smaller matters also adding expense, the marginal cost of this new block versus fooling with an old one is around $1000 for which you essentially get a new engine. This development is going to change our thinking and ensure the continuation of the Atomic 4 into the next generation. Bravo to Moyer Marine! (Westerbeke, eat your heart out.)

In selecting this configuration, we attempted to provide a nucleus for rebuilding an engine that has a block with a fatal crack or as an economical alternative to reusing a block that requires extensive machining or repair. Our new block is produced by the supplier who has been making our heads and manifolds for over ten years, using the same corrosion-resistant materials. Price: $1856.00 plus shipping This price does not include a $350 core charge which is added at the time of sale and refunded when we receive your rebuildable block in our shipping container. |

Nicely done MMI
I can't imagine the amount of effort that went into this. As said previously, hope I never need one, relieved they're available if I do.
This is HUGE!!

+1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you have an Atomic 4 in your boat, now there is absolutely no reason to ever consider a diesel re-power.
I am still working on FWC, but now the frantic search for a used motor (and subsequent dwindling block supply) to have ready 'at a moments notice' has been alleviated. Congrats again, MMI.

Well done
Just today I was talking to a guy looking to buy a boat. He didn't want anything with an A4 in it because they are too hard to find parts for....he is so wrong...after seeing this post....so very wrong.
You have your niche and as Shawn has said, there is no reason to worry about needing a block any more. These engines have been running for years and the technology 70-80 years along. I love the A4. Well done MMI and all involved.

the excellence continues!
Bill, thanks for the explanation regarding the pencil zinc..I was wondering what that was!
For those of you that have ventured to the Sailing Anarchy forum once or twice, I just started a thread regarding Moyer's announcement. I'll probably go start one at SBO too. Spreading the news as far & wide as possible. SA A-4 link

I am happy about the announcement of a new block. I am wondering
why it is only a 1 year warranty though. For something as major as a new block I would like to see a 3 year warranty. barring abuse or neglect due to overheating or freezing. Last edited by ArtJ; 07-05-2011 at 05:48 AM. |

Does the new block have the same alloy content as the factory original blocks which were so corrosion resistant?
Also ,how much operating history so far? Regards |

According to Bill
so they've got as least as much materials history as with their aftermarket heads.
