Transmission problem - reverse

I've been chasing a reverse problem for the past few years. I've only had reverse for a little bit out of those few seasons.

Adjusting the adjustment nut under the transmission cover would only give me reverse for perhaps 5 minutes of use. After that, no more reverse.

I shortened and shifted the shifter cable so that the movement of the shifter lever is sightly shortened, and shifted 'fowward' (more room to move into reverse). That worked for 10 minutes or so and now, no more reverse. Tried adjusting the adjustment nut again. Worked for another 10 minutes and now no more reverse.

I am not sure if replacing the transmission cable will solve the problem.

What should I try next?

Motor is a 70s era late model A4 with direct drive, as installed from the factory on my Bristol 30. Cable runs from engine to stbd side, behind the quarterberth, then into the cockpit. Sits just under knee level on the stbd side if you're standing behind the helm.

Are you holding pressure on the shift lever in reverse or expecting it to stay in reverse on its own? What oil are you using? Synthetic?

The chronic loss of adjustment could be due to the shift lever not being firmly attached at the transmission on the engine.
Can you reliability find reverse with the cable disconnected and shift by hand using the lever on the engine? If you can then there is a cable problem.
Many times funky shifting is caused by the cable outer cover not being held firmly in place. I think you would have discovered that by now with all the adjusting.

TRUE GRIT
