Back Again
Used to be on here but moved from eastern Canada to Western Canada couple of years ago and forgot my password so I just started fresh again.
Sailing a Cal 29 (Hull # 3) now, had a Catalina 27 back east. Catalina had an A4,. With this Cal I have had to go to the dark and sooty side with the diesel that was in it. After two years and a lot on money I have got it working good but HONESTLY I would rather have my old A4 back. Ran quiet and smooth with no smell and had lots of reserve power. Granted the diesel is less hp at 21 but I never came close to using all the A4's power in the C27. I am quite sure this Cal came with an A4 when new. That's off my chest now so hi everyone! |

What diesel do you have? If I recall, the factory was installing Volvo's but with hull #3 that was a long time ago.

My diesel is a universal m25 xp (Kubota 850 I think)
It is all right but I would like a bit more power. |

Hmmm, the M25 should be more than enough power for a Cal 29. Are you sure yours is running properly? When was the last time the injectors and air cleaner were serviced?

Thanks for your interest Neil but it is running good, will get up to hull speed plus a bit if you don't mind the noise.. I spent enough money on it that it should get the boat airborne.

I'm glad for you it's running well and sorry it cost what it did to get it there but with that information I don't understand the desire for more power if you're achieving hull speed with power to spare.
Except for the unavoidable noise and stank, the M25 has a good reputation other than the alternator mount on the timing gear cover. It eventually breaks the cover and a replacement is not available. If yours has the cover mount the sooner you look into the improved configuration the better, certainly while your timing gear cover is still intact. http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/u...rnator_bracket

That engine or prop has some kind of issue if your power is insufficient. Plenty of bigger boats use the same or smaller size diesel. The C&C 34 came with an A4 or an 18 HP Yanmar for one example.
