To get washers the right size to press the old cutless bearing out, it isn't hard to start with washers that are a little too big and take their edges down approximately evenly on a grinding wheel.
My tool to get the bearings in is a giant C clamp, plus a cheater bar to get more leverage on the clamp's threaded rod. I smear my cutless bearings with antiseize compound before pressing them in. I don't know if it helps, but antiseize is really messy, and making a mess always makes me feel like I'm doing a better job. In fact I smear antiseize all over the parts -- the key, the keyway, the shaft, and the coupling. But NOT on the prop nuts - those are supposed to be left dry. |

I put the bearing in the freezer and smeared it quickly with dish soap. It popped right in.

Neil..as you are aware, it is in fact the same cats...they seem to know their stuff. Although you can usually pick out the people that know their stuff from the ones that don't, confirmation is always nice.
tenders..I in fact did that..i was in the hardware store with calipers selecting the smallest of the 1.25" diameter washers...the employees thought I was weird ...but the cutting with Dremel ultimately worked. The ID of the strut is 1.235" so hopefully the freezer/ice water/etc. drink will work!

Indigo Prop
Splash down. Just put the boat in with the new prop. Seems to run good. Did not have time to fully test but will in the next week. I'll send some pictures soon.

Charles,
Please keep us informed about your opinion of this prop; we've heard many positives and not many negatives, don't be afraid to be be critical if you are so inclined. Tom |

Here is a few pictures. So far, just moving around the dock seems to be much better.

Looks an awful lot like my Catalina 30. These things look huge out of the water, but feel so small over the horizon. Happy sailing. Tom |

By the way, the previous owner had the bottom painted with Pettit Ultima Pro in 2005 and except for the zincs, which were due, I probably could have gone another year without paint.

Go 4 it
Hey Charles, I am looking forward to hearing how the prop performs for you and Shawn. I have a bit heavier boat and mine works fine and the engine seems much happier.
BTW, I now have about 15 hours on the std. plug and checked them out again last night. They still look a perfect light tan (milk chocolate) in color and no idle problems at all. I still think they are giving me a bit more power when I lean on the lil beastie a bit more than normal. I will be making a long weekend trip for the 4th and should have a bit more info on the plugs. I may be needing to do the cooling system flush as when I went out last tuesday there were dinghy races all over the marina so we motored out in good wind (20+) and had to lean on the A-4 a bit harder than my normal cruise and the temp began to rise a bit. I have a spare impeller and closed the bypass a bit for the upcoming trip. Good luck guys and have a great Fourth of July! Dave Neptune |

Charles,
That Pettit paint was on my short list when I expected I was going to have to strip down the bottom completely. Since it wasn't in such bad shape, I went to the P.O.'s house and checked in the shed for leftover paint cans & used the same stuff (which was West Marine CPP) It was a little cheaper too, but has held up OK. Speaking of paint...looks like you used the Pettit 1792 Zinc spray on the prop/shaft as well. My buddy says it is great..would be interested in the results of how it holds up too!

glass work done!
OK, 1.82" on average. The inside of the tube did not turn out quite as smooth as I hoped...I might have yanked the PVC out a little early, or the glass business stuck to it upon removal.
At any rate, I'll see what it looks like after a little cleaning up and snap some more pics. I am trying to think of a low abrasive to use inside the tube to avoid removing any material right now and just cleaning up the blush/hanging strings, etc..It may end up being sandpaper on a stick or more likely a 3/4" dowel or something!

rear main seal
Oh, I also finally remembered to try and get some pics of the rear seal.
Almost a good shot except for the glare on that bolt from the flashlight. So, I am pretty sure with the oil dripping off the engine half of the coupling that the seal is bad. Looks like I'll be calling up Ken today, unless I am off base and someone steers me somewhere else. I'll try to get better pics with the good camera..I keep forgetting it! Holy crap I never realized how DIRTY it was under the motor..I'll be doing some cleaning while I am down there!

"A Boreing Job"
Shawn
Now is certainly the right time to replace that leaking rear seal. In similar situations where I needed to "clean up" the bore of a long hole I have used a piece of dowell (in this case 1" would be appropriate) that I would split down the center a few inches, insert a strip of sandpaper and wrap around in a clockwise direction. You can, at this point either ream the hole manually or center drill it and screw in a cutoff lag bolt so that you can insert it into your drill motor and "power" your way through the project. A final "swab" of epoxy to the inside of the shaft log tube will insure that it's sealed nicely. Happy 4th, Tom |

Tom,
nice play on words thanks for your advice...We have a nice weekend coming up here...hot, but low humidity...a rarity in Southern Maryland, so I'll probably take my time and do it manually. Good idea on a slathering of epoxy, and Neil mentioned I should also add bottom paint at some point. Happy 4th to all. Had a nice talk with Ken in parts today...they'll be here on Tuesday..still waiting to hear about the shaft, etc..it was supposed to ship yesterday. edit - Let me reiterate how awesome Moyer Marine is. I know, I know, preposition at the end and all. Somehow, (& if I have all my details correct), they manage to have Ken live in the Atlanta suburbs, have Steven Moyer ship parts from Pennsylvania, while Don & Bill are on the Eastern Shore of Maryland..& a 10 minute phone call has parts en route. I happily found a UPS ship notification in my inbox this afternoon...I ordered the parts at 1:30 PM!! I build electronic technology solutions for the Navy in my job, so I know this stuff..these guys are the epitome of efficiency & using modern technology to its fullest!

Update on the indigo prop
We have been motoring to and around the south sound since Saturday (no wind). After we got the timing dialed in better with the new prop, we are getting nice speed from it, the boat seems to push through the water much easier and the motor is not affected by the tide changes like with the little 2 blade. It also seems to run much more efficently and my calculations indicate we are getting about .7 gals an hour. With the 2 blade, the figure was a little over 1 gal per hour. We have gone over 30 hours on it so far and another 30 to get back assuming no wind, which is the prediction... and hot weather in the 90s.

update, almost met Bill, cutless bearings
Poor boat..she's lonely.
I finally got a chance to get over yesterday and start moving forward on this project. Bill (the Administrator) was at Spring Cove yesterday on his pretty Sabre which I saw at the dock, with no souls aboard. Apparently, Bill found my boat on the hard in the same condition a couple hours earlier on his way to dinner..so, unfortunately, we just missed each other. Yesterday I only had a small window of work time, so I decided to try and press in the new cutless bearing. Using some tool ideas and tips from other C-30 friends, I put the cutless into my cooler full of beer (I mean ice ) and started prepping my press. I lubed up the strut with good ol' MMO, and wiped the outside of the bearing with some MMO too and went to work. The pressing process, although slightly tedious, was uneventful. Below are a few pics, not necessarily in chronological order...one with the press in place, one halfway done (beer break!) & a 3rd when I got it in as far as I could. Is it normal for them to be 1/8" too long? I've just bottomed out at the back end of the strut and I have that much sticking out the front. Now, what do I do? Do I just chop off the end with a cutting wheel on a Dremel? It is supposed to be blazing hot again this weekend, but my wife is out of town, so no honey-do list..just a Shawn-do list, which will be, "sweat out every ounce of liquid from your body if necessary, but get this boat floating again!!!!!"

Yep, just leave the cutless bearing lik that with some of it sticking out. If you start cutting it you'll heat it up and disturb the rubber/bronze bond and you'll be replacing it again before you know it.

Heh-heh -- the "hottest thread" now on MMI's forums is labelled "Indigo"! See http://www.moyermarine.com/forums/index.php.
Welcome back Shawn -- good to see progress on that shaft system. Hope the sail was a good one. It's been a great summer all along the coast, I think. Friend got caught in a punchy offshore thunderstorm down there though.

Hot!
rigs,
hot, both figuratively and in reality here on the East Coast. It is only supposed to get worse (& humid) this weekend. Today I made some more progress on the shaft tube. An inspection mirror revealed some 'inconsistencies' with my roundness of the tube...So, today I did a little sanding to remove all the rough edges from the glass tape, & then I did a final West System epoxy batch with 403 filler to smooth the gaps. Believe it or not, my measurements from a few weeks ago were almost perfect...after about 25 minutes of sanding with emory cloth, the new stuffing box hose slid on with just a little rocking back & forth. The epoxy work today should even everything up, and with another 30-45 minutes of sanding, it should be done. We'll know tomorrow..it was cooking pretty fast, even with the 206 slow hardener I had to hurry to apply today in 93 degrees. I think I took another bad cell phone pic...I'll upload it to the thread if I can find it. edit - Ok, the only pic I took was another shot of the cutless bearing from the aft end. Sorry, I'll try to remember the good camera if the wife doesn't take it with her on 'girl's screw off weekend'

Further Indigo adventures
Shawn,
Keep battling; it's worth it. We raced to Provincetown from Marblehead last weekend. You can guess how well we did when I say that we had a lot of fun. The best part of the sail was roaring to the finish on a tight beam reach and hitting 7.2 knots. Not too shabby for an old boat with old sails. We'd have done just fine as against the other boats if conditions had been like that the whole way. As I said, lots of fun. We had to motor most of the way back to Marblehead as there was no wind in Massachusetts Bay and when we were within about six miles of home the wind sprang up sharply from the northwest and we were soundly headed. Setting the mainsail just right gave us a boost such that RPM on the tach actually increased slightly, a load apparently being taken off the engine. We motored for six hours all together at a consistent 5.5 knots at 2000 RPM. When engine temperatures slowly climbed at the fifth hour from 155 to near 180 I slightly closed the bypass and the temperature dropped right back to the normal 155. We filled the tank before we left Marblehead at the start of the race and I had a crew member keep track of engine hours so when I fill up again I should have a pretty good idea of gallons per hour over a pretty long stretch. Good work indeed
Shawn, guilty Dave here. I have been watching your progress and learnig a few tricks from all of the information this "Indigo" thread has garnered. Your work looks top notch and you are being quite methodical in your approach. Kudos to you as you have brought a good deal of useful tips as well as good nature during this series of "Murphy's Law" projects.
I feel bad for you having to be on the hard with the shortened season you enjoy on the east coast. I am leaving for my 7th weekend at the island and my Indigo is still doing fine and I can't wait to hear what you have to say when you get yours a spinnin' at the end of your straight drive line.
