HX cleanout?

Chatting with an old sailor at the dock yesterday who says HX needs to be routinely preventively de-scaled every few years.

Do others agree? I have the Indigo HX kit, in salt water, and run at about 180 degrees. If so, how often? How? Pull it and take it to a rad shop?

Thanks!

I did it twice when hooking it up because the fresh water side was getting crap from the engine.
I got a big tub of water with soap and vinegar, took the end caps off, and let it soak. I blasted it out with a water hose and put the caps back on.

You end up doing of them at once. It is not complex.
Take caps off
Soak in tub
Squirt and/or blow out
Caps on

Marty, use straight vinegar and no water. It may take a day or 3 of soaking.

Never tried using soap too. Joe, do you use a bit of soap first to get oily residue out then soak or just what?

I had one heat exchanger (Onan gen set) where I actually had to drill out the tubes! Took a special order long drill bit. Once open, I used a wire brush (cleaning brush from the gun shop) to get down to metal.
