    Dry Exhaust Hose

Can anyone recommend a hose for use in the dry hot section of the exhaust?

I am in the process of replacing the dry exhaust section from my A4 back to a water jacket (and possibly more). The original exhaust leak occurred after I realigned the motor during a shaft and cutlass replacement. I think the tweaking of the motor pushed the exhaust over the edge. so my thought is to keep stress off the exhaust is to have a flexible section. I can only seem to find wet hoses.

    Thanks,

    Brad

I think a better idea is rerouting the flexible wet hose. I am not really sure where to get flex hose for the dry section.

As far as I know there are no dry exhaust hoses. There are flexible metal exhaust pipes. I know I have seen one guy use something like that here.

The exhaust systems that we use on the Atomic Four seem to all be iron pipe from the manifold to whatever or wherever the water is inject, as a generalization.

Water is needed to cool the hose as it cant take the heat of dry exhaust.

I am not sure about an A4, but airplanes with EGT gauges can see over the 1200 degrees F this hose is rated for. I have seen as high as 1400 degrees.

I noticed it was not rated for salt water or potable water but could stand harsh chemicals. Interesting.

If you crawl under your car (late model), you may see a similar thing on the exhaust.

Joe - I am a pilot too and thought the same. First let me say that I plan to put a pyrometer on the exhaust and check it.

A couple of thoughts: a typical lycoming runs 9:1 and the EGT is the in the flow. The wall temperatures run lower. These are all stainless construction (304 & 321). Temperature rating is typically based on derating the working pressure. Unfortunately McMaster Carr's data sheet are also lacking so I don;t know what it derates to at high temp (but hopefully I can get mfgr p/n when I get the hose).

Also the A4 manifold has some water cooling, so the EGT may well be under 1200. I just don't know for sure. The pressure is only a few PSI, so there is that.

+1 - A 30" section ($120) is a little cheaper than it just cost me to buy a new mixer, flange & $25 worth of 1 1/4" pipe.
