    Cracks in the block

Hey, guys, its great to see that this forum is prospering as always.

    So straight to the question:
I have this old A4 cast iron block that I was considering rebuilding. However, it has some hairline cracks and I wonder if I should even bother dealing with it.

Do machine shops ever weld those cracks? Or should I just toss it?

I'd say she's dead, Jim. That block froze hard or was badly dropped somewhere along the way.

      "It's Possible"

If this was an irreplaceable block from a 1920 "Harrumpmobile", block welding experts would clean, weld, sleeve and make the block "usable". In the case of an A4 it just ain't practical.

I just wanted to comment on the very liberal use of the term “hairline cracks”. That’s more like a head of hair-line crack.

Would be very interested if Mr. Fenner could reserect it. Don’t know anything about the geometry of the welds that would have to occur but have been absolutely mesmerized by his abilities. If anyone would like to get completely consumed by a YouTube channel his is the one to watch. Don’t usually engage in such thoughts but I truly believe he may be a warlock or something. Or just maybe a master at what he dose. Still wondering if such a thing could be fixed if one had bottomless pockets 🤔 and how it would compair to a new casting.
