1973 Pearson 30 Sloop
Hi, I have a 1973 Pearson 30 Sloop and would like to remove the Universal Atomic 4 gas engine and was wondering how the process would work? does it fit up through the companionway via a large winch or crane ? ? ?
Thanks |

You can bring the weight of the engine down to about 200# by removing things such as the flywheel, starter, and manifold. It's quite manageable. Good to pump out the oil first as there's no seal at the flywheel end!
The main halyard works well if the mast is in the boat. Take the halyard directly to the engine - don't put the boom in bending. Just use the boom to outhaul the lift away from the mast. It's easy to lift the engine out the companionway, then swing the boom to lower the engine over the side. |

What he said ^
Do NOT bend the boom! When I use the boom the halyard and the come-along attach in the same place. I always remove the starter, manifold, and alternator before removing or installing an engine. I never got around to removing the flywheel, but that sounds good. If you do all that and you have a strong back, two of you can pick the engine up. |

I always wonder if that boat is still sailing. We bought her brand new in 1973 and sold her a few years later. For a long time we got postcards from the new owner.

We're not going to hold that against you!
Just sold my Tartan 30 (today) to a guy from Windsor, ME who will be keeping it in Rockland. We'll be doing the delivery in a month (Memorial day weekend - full moon). He was talking about trucking it, but I told him the boat knows the way (been there 3x). |

Could you tell us why the engine is being removed? Got a new one? Rebuilding it?
