propane?
Hey everyone,
I'm new to the site. I am sure that there is a reason that I haven't heard about a propane conversion for A-4s. Could someone please enlighten me on the matter? Thanks. |

I can't answer your question but I am curious to know why you would do it. I can't imagine that it would be more economical. It certainly wouldn't be more convenient as far as availability of fuel, and what would it do to your cruising range? The same safety issues that apply to gas would also apply to propane.

This is anecdotal at best, but I know of some trucks that converted and it wasn't horribly complex. There was better power and cleaner burning. Propane may not be as readily available as gas at marinas, but it is by no means rare. I'm guessing most boats in the A4 size range weren't constructed with dedicated propane lockers, so you'd probably have to do some modifications. Its certainly possible to do, but I think the modifications and inconvenience would weigh against it.

Would a 20lbs. tank of propane (approx 4.5 gallons by my local propane supplier if I remember) give the same range as 4.5 gallons of good ol' petrol???
Interesting concept.

The original reason for propane fueled vehicles was propane at the time was half the price of gasoline and burned cleanly - engine oil changes were prolonged also. I don't think the same holds true today as far as price is concerned? |

Thanks everyone,
Mostly just curious and thought it might be convenient to have a single fuel source for an auxiliary, stove/oven and heater. Last edited by tony s.; 03-02-2009 at 09:17 PM. |
