    Local destinations

    Who would go there now??

A few notes regarding the article:
    • Cleve Hardaker is the owner of Sojourn, the vintage Catalina 30 previously mentioned on this forum that owned the 2009 Ensenada race
    • The boatyard at Ensenada used to be a viable option for Southern California boaters who wanted old school bottom paint that is not over regulated by the State of California
    • Los Coronados is - or was - a very popular island destination out of San Diego (~12 miles?) particularly for fishing

As long as the Zapa's are posting videos of them decapitating or butchering their rivals with chainsaws on the Internet I will never set one foot in that country - ever.

Heh heh. Those boat owners need to learn how to apply appropriate "grease" to the wheels of Mexican "justice".

Apparently this is just after the Mexican officials have been convinced to NOT take the mordida, so the eay way out is not working

I think the Mexicans are pissed off because Colorado just made pot legal; wait 'til Texas and Arizona follow suit - it'll wreck their economy.

As of this date many but not all of the impounded boats have been released. The forum discussions have been roughly split into two sides:
            • One side says Mexico is and always has been a non-functioning government and they would never ever take their boat there. I tend to share the opinion. I live 100 miles from the border and wouldn't even consider entering the country by boat, truck or on foot.
            • The other says it's the boat owners' fault throwing their ugly American weight around, didn't show the proper respect as a visitor to the country.
One particular commenter who is currently cruising in Mexico said the officials monitor the popular sailing forums on the internet and wield their authority in reaction to unfavorable comments, would we please tone it down? Yep, the selective application of law is affected by comments on the internet. That's not me talking but someone who is actually there.

"the selective application of law" is what has kept me out of Mexico for the last 25 years. I look at Los Coronados everyday and wish I could sail down (it's only 20 miles) and explore, but having had to "escape" from Mexico 1 too many times, as a teen, I've decided it's better to admire it from afar. Someday I'll get up to Avalon, Neils backyard.

This kind of thing makes you really appreciate living in a 1st world country.

So let me see if I got this straight: If we shut up and/or say nice things about crooked officials they will be less crooked and be nice to us if they feel like it.

And don't forget to show them the picture of Ben Franklin that's in your wallet.
                    Now that's respect!

HA! Great story from another forum:
I once consulted for a company that had a plant in Mexico across the border from Brownsville TX. One of their pickups went missing. They ended up finding it being driven by the local police. When they confronted them they were given a location to retrieve it. They did and it had been summarily stripped.
