distributor cap

1.) If Ignitor is fitted to Delco distributor, is a modified cap required? Easily modified if yes?
2.) Is the flywheel housing in a late model (part bolted to block) different from that of the early model?

Thanks,

Doug Soden

If you have a dremel or a round file, you can modify the cap to fit the new wiring of the ignitor.
I believe moyer also sells a cap that has been clearanced.
There were several flywheel housings, the late model had at least 2

Hmmm, mine required no such modification. There's a booted recess in the distributor body that worked well.

The new wires and boot are much larger than stock, and push against the cap and make it hard if not impossible to tighten down without crimping something.

When I changed over , I just installed the new ignitor kit. put it back together and VOILA ! ran great . I wasn't aware of any distribitor cap modifications .

I'm not sure, I don't think you can use a early model flywheel housing on a late model engine , the housing would fit , but there is a pinion gear clearance problem , at the the starter.
cheers Rick

Thumbs up

I had the same experience as Daniel...I used a round file (or a pocket knife in a pinch like on that old Sabre that had been on the hard for years) to put a little notch in my cap to keep from pinching the wires on the Pertronix EI.

Early model flywheel housing

You can use the early model housing on a late model engine, but you have to grind a little off part of the casting. I understand that this is actually what Universal did for a while when they changed flywheels and starters.
