Alternator

My voltage regulator smoked the other day. I would prefer to get a used alternator to get me buy until I can spring for a upgraded one from MMI. Anyone have one they are willing to part ways with?

Because I am dumb and left it unconnected to the battery bank after a partial re-wire. Anyone know what diodes is uses or a replacement regulator that will work? I have the early model 35amp.

I know just enough about the electrical stuff to get in trouble. If you have the Prestolite ALE 5204 alternator the VBV 6201 voltage regulator will work. That is what I have on the MC. Do you have EI? Dan S/V Marian Claire

Why does anyone smoke??? The surgeon general's warning is printed right there on the pack.

Alternatively you could look for a 'smoke replacement kit' for the voltage regulator on ebay. Scroll down in this link for the 'wiring smoke replacement kit': http://www.mez.co.uk/lucas.html

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Having owned two MGB's over the years, that mention of Lucas brings back especially painful memories....

Yes, the British always did seem to be more preoccupied with building laminated wood interiors than reliable electrical systems!

In an off-list discussion I mentioned I had to slightly modify my lifting bracket to accommodate my Delco alternator. A picture was requested and since we can't send attachments via Private Messaging I'm doing so here.

What I'm trying to show in the pic is where I ground off the square underside of the bracket to a 45 degree angle. One is circled, there are two additional surfaces to the left that needed the modification, they show in the pic too. This allowed the alternator to swivel on its pivot bolt sufficiently.

I recently fried my alternator as well. Fortunately for me another forum member generously offered me his original alternator (see this thread) During my search process I was able to find several sources that had replacement regulators for my defective alternator. I did not opt for the replacement regulator as I was not sure that was the reason the alternator was putting out high voltage. If you know it is the regulator that is defective and the alternator model it is pretty easy to google and find out the matching regulator. They are in the $30-$40 range.

I was unable to find the regulator, but have been lead to a higher output alternator that is a great price, so I will be going that route. I also need to replace my head gasket and clean up the engine while I'm at it.
