Old Westerbeke Pilot shaft coupling

Non-A4 history question. Friend has an out of production Westerbeke "Pilot" diesel engine. The prop shaft coupling bolts to the transmission side with three bolts that go into a kind of mirror-image coupling. That coupling is held onto the shaft coming out of the transmission by at least one thin brass nut and a brass washer. No manuals or images available from Westerbeke or on the net so far. Anyone know if that nut was backed up by a second thin nut at one time, to lock the transmission-side coupling to the tranny output shaft?
