Fire Prevention
This morning we had a boat fire in the marina. No one was at the marina at the time. A couple of other boats with repairable damage. There would have been more damage had it happened at night.
The Canadian Navy Dive Team (Atlantic) members noticed the fire, scrambled and pulled a C&C 29 to safety (the one I fixed the engine on last week). Dive Team Members were unable to knock the fire down. Navy Fire Tug as well as Base Fire responded. The tug Skipper put her in between all the boats with just feet on either side and held her in place with thrusters....as he just dumped water on the fire and put it down. He had wind on the beam and there were a few nervous onlookers but some fine seamanship prevailed. My friend lost his C&C 30 and the fire went out as she sank. His was a beautiful boat and he is a good seaman. Ensure we check everything when we leave the boat. EDIT 1: the boat that caught fire had a diesel engine and the fire was electical in nature. EDIT 2: one boat (collateral damage) written off over $60,000 damage, another with $4000 damage and another with $15,000 damage. What's worse is that other people will loose their sailing season also.

Sorry to hear about his loss
Beings that I'm currently trying to sort out a fuel delivery issue this hits pretty close to home. Glad no one was hurt.

Right you are.
I don't think his fire was fuel related. He went sailing yesterday and this morning around 10 or so the fire tug was on scene. His engine is diesel. You are right, it's good that no one was hurt. He can get another boat and insurance will fix the collateral damage as well.

I went to a marina yesterday to pick up an engine, my friend showed me a Catilina 30 he just bought to junk out. Seems the owner put a new fuel pump on his A4 and motored over to the fuel dock to fill up. tied his boat up and went inside to see about fuel. When he look out the window his boat was engulfed in flames. It was a total loss he had it for sale for $20,000 his insurance gave him $ 7000. Not pretty.
