    Starter rebuild

My late model starter was periodically making a grinding noise during startup, so I installed the spare I had on hand. Seems to be better, but only limited testing so far.

I have taken apart the first starter but cannot see a problem. Very slight accumulation of a brownish dust in the end toward the throw-out gear. No sign of unusual wear on the gears. Can worn brushes cause this problem? If so, do I need a pro?

I am out of my depth but did repair an early model starter years ago. When I opened that one up it was easy to see that the cotter pin (king pin?) had broken and bits of it were everywhere. Cleaned it up and it worked fine for several years.

    Thanks!
