The Full A-4 Parts Catalogue from Universal
Hi Roadnsky,
That is one of the A-4 manuals. There was the smaller version (probably what you sent)that used to come with the engine, and the larger (8 1/2 x 11) version with a bit more specifications one can purchase direct from Universal. There is also an 8 1/2 by 11 stapled catalogue from Universal thats lists all parts available (circa 1965) for the A-4. I have seen a scan of that floating around. I have a copy of the original (my family bought Piper back in 1967, so we have had time to collect info). The scanned copy I saw did not have the FWC system, which was probably a later addition to any catalogue. Thanks for your effort to find the material. David |

Thanks for your kindness. I did see that publication on-line, and looked in it. I did not find the FWC tank or heat exchange parts in it. Either way, seeing the Catalgue is really of no help to me. What I have is NOT a standard Universal FWC system part. Instead, after Hurricane Bob I was checking the Want-Advertiser (that was before Craig's List), and found someone selling an A-4 complete with FWC system for $400. Apparently his 32' Pearson Vanguard was one of the many boats grounded in my harbor. With his salvage money on the boat and engine (it must have gotten a bit flooded), he repowered his boat. So I bought the whole old lot for the good parts. He had installed a system of Sendure heat exchanger and a Sendure made tank, parts off the shelf. Most everything I bought was transferable, but (of course) the engine compartments are different between the Vanguard and T27 with the Vanguard calling for an off-engine FWC system mounting, so the FWC mounting system for the T27 had to be different (1/2 on the engine, 1/2 off) Apparently like with an original Universal system, I'm hanging the coolant tank on the exhaust manifold studs. But the exact hanger system has to be customized for the specific tank I have. I have cobbled together a specific solution which I am upgrading. Thanks for your interest and offer. regards, David |

No problem. I see now what you're after. If you're up to it, post some pics of your system and the FWC experts will give you more ideas than you can possibly use...

As I look at it, I see that the alternator is effectively hung on a bracket (which also serves as an engine hoist point) sharing the engine head studs, so stealing some extra duty from some of these oversized studs is one of the oldest tricks! |

heat exchangers
i just installed the mmi fwc kit but have not charged it as yet, because i am not happy with the type of ex changer, the verticle style is not what i would prefer a horizontal tank would work much better take up less room an all in all make a much neater installation does any one have a suggestion as to the best way to go about solving this problem as mmi only has 1 style as does indigo art

The revival of this thread is timely for me. Just yesterday I started adding the bits and pieces of the MMI FWC kit.
I discovered that luckily for me, the heat exchanger will fit inside the small engine compartment. It will make things a little more crowded, but I don't think it will be horribly so. I was concerned I was going to have to squeeze it in behind the rear bulkhead, under the cockpit, which would make it a P.I.A. to get at. Anyhow - how critical is it that the heat exchanger be mounted perfectly vertically? What if it is mostly vertical but tilted at say, 10 or 20 degrees off vertical? It would be tilted such that the horizontal arm with the fill cap remains level and horizontal - i.e., imagine rotating it around that axis - not tilting it so that the horizontal arm ends up at an angle. I am assuming that to do this would not be an issue.

Bill, If you plan to motorsail, with any wind, you are likely not going to be vertical anyway. Not an expert here on FWC but I think slightly off vertical won't be an issue.
Get that thing in the water, stop dilly dallying around!

My old heat exchanger went bad and I was close enough to drive down to the Sen-Dure office/factory and the only person around at lunch hour was the chief engineer. He took down the measurements of my old HE, asking if I wanted a two pass system and a zinc fitting. So if you can't find a stock HE they can make one up for you to your specifications.
