Carb Choke cable retention

One visit to the boat & I'm full of questions..

Second ?? for the night..

I just added a crankcase recirc kit & had the carb off once again. Cleaned it out, once again. ( Yes I do have a Racor, upgraded from the non-legal 120A clear bowl with the always-entertaining spinning and spinning and spinning filter to the metal bowl 320R).

As I am re-installing the choke cable I am reminded how much joy it is to
a) clamp the cable hard enough so it won't slip & add hours of troubleshooting to my erstwhile cruises and
b) not too hard to crush the thing.

What have others done to secure it? Tiny hose clamps? I could use a good solution here. When I took it off this time I found my missing vise grips which I suppose is another solution. Just leave 'em on.

Thx, TD

Tom-
Can you clarify a bit which end of the cable you're talking about?
(The carb or cockpit end?)

On my boat the carb has a very secure attachment set up (see pic) and the cockpit side has a knob.

Maybe you just need a new cable?

Carb End..

Jerry: that's a great picture: On the other side of the arrow is a nut that spins freely without a wrench to grab it. I have a vee drive and access the engine via a hatch over the gear box, That side is blind and even worse, on my left. I cannot get it to secure the cable without much fuss.

Tom,
It is supposed to be a square nut and it then rests against the bracket and won't spin. Here is another pic out of the Moyer catalog. Maybe someone put a different nut on there, or the tab got moved and won't hold the nut?

Incidentally, there are notes scattered about the Moyer site (& I think in the book too) about how fragile the two screws are that hold the choke to the butterfly and the retainer bracket, so be careful with them! Jerry's great picture , shows them clearly. Jerry, your carb is so clean, we could eat a sandwich off of it!

Note…that the screw has a hex head. Using a nut driver or a ¼” drive socket will work better than a plain screw driver when this screw is hard to get at. Bob

Square nut..

.. there's a line in here somewhere..

I'll try to get a wrench in there, but the vise grips when locked will hold itself in place. I do use the hex head w/ a 1/4" driver. I seem to have trouble finding the balance between tight enough to hold the sheath of the cable & not so tight to clamp the core.

I was thinking of roughing up the cable exterior for better grip.

Tom,
I also have a metal jacket (sheath) on mine, so it is not quite as prone to sliding around...I would think the clamp grips it better than the black plastic???
Another suggestion may be to try some type of tape or something with some friction properties..duct tape or similar that might provide additional friction (in addition to fattening up the clamped area) without crushing the sheath??
