Do I need a new fuel pump?
Hello everyone. I am trying to figure out if I need to buy a new fuel pump. I don't know what model pump it is because it is painted over. I have attached a picture so you can see what I am concerned about. There is a stream of gunk running down the side of the pump cylinder. I have noticed a slick in my exhaust discharge as well as in the bilge when I empty it, so I am guessing it might be the fuel pump. The bilge also seems to have a lingering smell of stale oil. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions.

If it leaks , replace it.
Moyer stocks one that is ideal for the A-4. By the look of the fittings I would consider new lines from the tank to the carb. Would be great insurance regarding the fuel delivery system. Dave Neptune |

Maybe irrelevant, but if you are curious to know what kind of efi you have there, see if you can read any series of numbers on the left and right side of the face of mounting bracket. This may or may not require the use of a wire brush or sandpaper to get the paint off. It looks like a Facet brand fuel pump, but not really sure which model until and unless there are numbers to be found on the mounting bracket.
Another piece of potentially helpful info is that the efi you do eventually replace this one with should have a PSI of 2.5-3.5 (if I recall my convo with Ken at MMI). My Facet efi is 4.5-5.5PSI (installed by the PO or PPO), but its running and I'm ok with it so far. I have a 74' Cat 27, so that PSI is what was recommended for mine. Yours may require a different PSI. Just be aware that Facet efi's all look alike, but their PSI are different. Something I wasnt aware of until the recent past. |

Second that. It is the standard A4 pump and Moyer sells the exact replacement. It looks pretty beat.

Looks like the rubber washer seal on the twist-lok cap is shot.
Don't know if it matters, but I've never seen one mounted with the cap on top. I've always considered the cap end the bottom.

thanks to that thread, I just discovered there was an internal filter in those pumps... I would have never guessed.
Thank you!!

And as Ed said, normally the pump is mounted with the cap at the bottom. INLET at the bottom and OUTLET on the top.

I could be wrong and please correct if I am but memory serves that the Facet internal filter is at the 70 micron level. Doesn't do much if you have 10 micron before/after except for degrading fuel line?

Thank you everyone for your helpful insights. Any thoughts on the PSI rating I should be using?

mounting orientation is important. I mounted mine upside down and it did not work.
