    What are the standards?

I did a quick Internet search for the ABYC standards but could only find ones I had to pay for. I have Nigel Calder book mechanical electrical manual 4th edition.
I have a couple of questions. Are there any full free standards out there I can get my hands on. I'm in NY. Who sets the rules for this stuff. The USCG or a combination of organizations. My entry into searching for this is proper bonding of the boat. I have finally set my strut and am ready to put my gas tank back in but need to reattache the what I assume was a bonding wire to one of the strut bolts. Of course I took no notes or pictures before dismantling the boat and am now scratching my head about how everything goes back together.
Would following Nigel Calders book keep it safe and legal or do I need to have more information on this. Thanks for the help

Here are the electrical standards. I recommend you save them to your own computer. Scroll to Section 11.16 for bonding. Good on you for seeking out the standards instead of being influenced by idiot dock experts.

    edit:
You're gonna need this one too, E-2 Section 2.5

Thank you for the link. I'm confident that I will be back for some clarifications.
        Thanks again.

ABYC are suggestions and the USCG rules are laws. FYI:
http://www.uscgboating.org/assets/1/...YC.1002.01.pdf will give you some hints. I have found the Calder books to be pretty good sources of ABYC and USCG regulations.

            yes but . . . .

In some cases the USCG has adopted ABYC Standards verbatim, Article P-1 Marine Exhaust Systems for example. Insurers take them pretty seriously too.

The point I'm trying to make is the ABYC Standards, although not rising to the level of federal law, are not without merit. That comes from a guy who has huge issues with their AC-DC bond requirement as we have discussed before.

ABYC standards are a very good idea. Did not mean to imply otherwise.

Never thought you did Joe. The difference between recommendation and legal requirement is an important distinction. Please notice Admin Bill has graciously provided us a new Standards forum category for ease of standards retrieval.
