Exclamation Engine revving

We are motoring along at 1800 rpm, when suddenly the engine rev'd to 2800. We lowered the throttle and it happened again. Oil pressure, water temp and colts are all normal. Any suggestions as to where to start troubleshooting?

Check the control cable. Be sure the cable is fixed down tightly at both ends and nothing is loose or sloppy.

Did the boat get up on plane?

Sounds like the tranny is slipping.

Or the prop is cavatating, but not likely if it happens intermittently.

I was thinking along this line too. Could be right on the edge of caveating\not caveating. CV How clean is the prop?

Check the forward "detent" adjustment. May just be slipping out of gear if you can't find anything worked loose on the cables. Not that uncommon.

You should feel a definite "KLICK" when shifting into forward. Unlike reverse which is dependent on pressure against the shifter by "hand" to keep the clutches engaged.

As has been mentioned, this really sound's like a case of transmission slippage. The first time it happened to me, I thought that the prop had fallen off. Adjusting the segmented collar one notch should cure the problem.

Update

We've checked the throttle cable and shift cable - the screws on both of these needed a little tightening. Right now, we're in Mystic Connecticut and are leaving tomorrow for Stonington (<5mi), so we won't be able to test it until tomorrow morning. Will report back then
Thanks for all of your suggestions

Update 2

She ran well yesterday- no issues. We're on a 32 mi motor sale to Newport RI today, so this should be a real test
