I think they look pretty darn good. That's the way my NGK XR4's pretty much look. Here's a link.

I'd be happy if my plugs looked like that! What got me was the Formica, wood and sink detail. It looks just like mine! I looked up your boat and I was right.

Any reason for all the rust?

Has the thermostat housing been leaking?
The part of the spark plug that has been inside the cylinder looks excellent. TRUE GRIT |

ah yes, the rust - this engine was recovered from a shed...
no thermostat leaks. however, now that leaks are mentioned, i do have a leak in my grease cup - i put some teflon tape on the threads and that helped the manual mentions a spring check valve. i took mine apart and there is a small brass fitting but no spring that i could see - am i missing a spring? peter |

Plugs look rusty and they do not match any real read is just a guess. What are the heat ranges and in which cylinder did it reside.
I'd try 4 of the stock plugs as I do see one, gap them a .035 with points or .040 with an E/I. Run them for a couple of hours and let it idle for 5~10 minutes before shutting down then do a plug read~~far more accurate. The color on the tips does look good but that is an odd combination of plugs for one engine. Dave Neptune |

I had not even noticed the one odd plug! Good catch. Plugs are arranged 1-2-3-4 right to left in the photo Will put in a matching set and do as you suggest Thank you Peter |

Your #1 looks a bit sootier than the rest, which is how mine look too. You MIGHT be running a bit rich. But you might be OK with that, as it makes the engine easier to start cold. My engine ALWAYS starts with the choke closed, and keeps running when the choke is opened instantly after starting. Leaner engines are harder to start and need the choke in for a few more seconds, but get slightly better mileage (nautage?).
