Fire Extinguisher Recall

"RickandLee" in another post reminded me, and I thought I'd pass it along. If any of you have Kidde brand extinguishers, go to their website and check yours against their recall list - you certainly don't want it failing when you need it most!

Yeah, things are slow as there are so many to recall. We has to send 30 back from the store.

Same in Canada...a few months back. I have 4 on the boat but they are not Kidd and no recall on them.

I do remember a car fire in the parking lot at the club a number of years back and my friend John (Captain FD) and myself ran for our extinguishers. I had a couple of 10lb aboard, John's boat was closer so he made it back with his 5 lb and it wouldn't work. The 10 lber snuffed out the fire in seconds...it was caused by a SS shroud coiled in the trunk of a car that fell over across the + and - leads of a fully charged marine 12v battery.

Our club is on a Military Base, so generally the Military FD responds to that stuff. John was city of Halifax FD...so with his cell he called the station he worked at (3km away) and told the boys to start heading to the club...so the truck left the station then. Then he called 911 and the dispatch came as they were on route. The Military Fire Fighter got their "nillies in a knot" because the City Responded first. Not everything goes according the the "plan".

Years ago, wife had her Chevy Nova convertible light off in a parking lot - right in front of a Ponderosa Steak House. Chef in the steak house came out and put out the fire (DO NOT open the hood!). Had an adjacent gas station (when they still did repair work) come and replace the carb - in place. Drove it home and repainted the spot on the hood. Got off easy on that one.
Son had a VW Rabbit do the same - had to total that one! No handy fire extinguisher!

Kidde made a lot of units with other names on them also.

Here is a pdf of the list.

Unfortunately, this is probably a big deal for Kidde (although they have a big home smoke detector business and stuff too). One key I've learned so far from them is that a fire extinguisher with a red horizontal key is exempt from the recall, as opposed to a vertical red key, which seems to be the focus of the recall. (guess what, I have the horizontal key style.)

I still recommend you punch in your serial #/manufacture date in their system to confirm.

I also learned from a friend that if you insist, they seem to acquiesce and send you a new one anyway, no matter what style red key.

My experience with the Kidde recall.
Back in November, 2017, I gathered most of my Kidde fire extinguishers and entered the info at the recall site. Five of them turned out to be recalled and Kidde has sent me replacements. All five have the "horizontal key".
I am not sure if the "horizontal key" notice was on the site back in November.
So I second the advice to enter your info and confirm one way or the other if your extinguishers are good.
Kidde has been efficient in getting the replacements to me and the return process is easy.

No tie to Kidde other than owning the fire extinguishers.

They replaced 9 of mine this time, including 3 from the last recall. The only one I had trouble with was recalled last time and not replaced. I can't figure out how to get that one done, but since some on the boat were 15 years old and Kidde replaced them, I'm not overly concerned.
