remove and paint the A4

Here is my "gal" in our winter nest. I am removing loose paint and washing with spiritus minerales prior to priming. All of the parts missing in this pic are already painted except the alt, which I am leaving original. I am also leaving most of the original paint on. It seems to me that the original paint, in good shape, is the best primer. That is why I am not using acetone as it is pretty effective at removing the paint
Anyone know of a source for the Universal metallic sticker that has the serial nr, etc on it? The serial is stamped on the block, fwd, but the sticker is classier.

To remove the engine:
After disconnecting the various systems and removing the mounting bolts I slid a 2 x 10 x 8 ft pine board under the engine and, using a short 6" wood block under the board on the cabin sole forward of the engine compartment as a fulcrum and the weight of a friend on the forward end, the A4 was lifted off the engine bed and since it was now on a downward slope I could easily pull it forward by sliding it on the board to a spot under the companionway. It took less time to do than it is to write about it. A local excavator used a Bobcat with a fork attachment to get the A4 up and out of the boat and into my pick-up.
I used a rope down through and around the bottom and up through the mounting holes in the oil pan as a sling.
I didn't use the lifting eye because it didn't feel right. I don't use the eyebolt embedded in the 900 lb lead keel to lift the CD "Typhoon" either. I believe CD used it to put the lead in place, not to lift the entire 2000 lb boat. I know guys that do it, though.

Be prepared for a slew of comments about your choice of beers. Guys here notice EVERYTHING.

Looks good.

Are not you a bit curious to see the pistons? Or maybe the bearings?

Smile Complete Overhaul

RC, I am curiious about the lower. My main goal is to button her up and get great compression in all four. That doesn't happen i will delve deeper. I am doing the valves - seats and new springs.
Bill, amazing what shows up when you take a pic. Afourians would make good photo interpreters.

clean A4

That is one clean looking A4. How long had it been in the boat before this working project? Any in-boat maintenance performed on the paint?

Thanks for the pictures and updates.

The choice of beer is appropriate but that old Perfection oil heater is probably costing you a bit from it's lower-than-average efficiency

nice engine,

Shop heater

Hi Kelly, It's all original 1969 paint and I can't find evidence of any other color layer. I know the PO never touched up the paint. The boat sat on the hard for 6 years before I bought her last year. She's still on the hard, but at home.

Russ, Dat be an Atlanta "Homesteader" wood burner. Cast iron box, sheet metal cover. I have a garage type overhead heater set on 40 deg to protect against freezing. Shop gets warm fast with the application of a few oak logs. Oh, oak. You probably never heard of that wood in Alaska.

You can see I'm taking your advice and being extra careful with the valve lapping compound.
Stop by tonight. Got some more "pale ale" for a show and tell.

If that's true about the paint, I am amazed. Granted, I live in a very humid climate (but far from tropical), but I don't think I could keep any paint on the engine in that kind of shape even if I were spraying it with WD-40 every afternoon.

When I post pictures of my engine, I use the ones from right after the new paint job that I completed about four years ago. I would be mortified with shame to share how it all looks today.

Don't see much Pale Ale in these parts...
