Dipstick!

Is there anything I can do to make it easier to read my dipstick? When I have recently changed the oil, it is hard to read due to the cleanliness of the new oil. Any suggestions? Paint it?

No....wipe and re-read.. You have to be diligent but I don't think you want any errant paint flakes coming off the dipstick and possibly into the motor...

If the oil is too clean, use your boat more!!!

Once you remove the dipstick lay it flat in a paper towel and do not rub the oil off but let the oil seep into the paper towel. You will easily be able to see how much oil is there according to your dipstick markings. Clear oil is hard to spot on the stick but it shows up plain as day on a paper towel, napkin or clean piece of white rag.

Cold Oil

I have found that cold oil is much easier to read that hot oil.

Because cold oil is more viscous, you get a fatter bead to read.

Works well for me even with clean, new oil.
