I know, there were two in the Portland area last week, going for next to nothing. OK, one of them was just a few miles from me, so I took it. No special plans for it, but I couldn't let it just go for scrap...

Might have something to do with haul-out season. The first time I had my boat hauled out, the yard manager was proposing all sorts of projects they could do for me (probably at ten times the value of the boat) starting with, "let's get that Atomic 4 out of there for you" like it was an impacted wisdom tooth or something.

I notice that these recent engines all seem to have the reducing gear on them, which I thought was pretty rare (?) Could this signify a trend of larger old boats being rehabbed? Or is that pushing the tea leaves too far...

i too was thinking that the reduction gear ones were rare, I don't know if they are or not. mine is not and don't really have a need for them, other than just saving it from the scrap pile. shame to have a great little motor go to scrap.
