Fuel Tank capacity in Ericson 27
I took on project 76 Ericson 27 with no fuel gage.
Anyone know the tank capacity? I ran out of gas, put 8 gallons in it but don't know how much more it will hold. |

dont accept any answer, find out for yourself. Empty the tank then fill it back up. Else you may be out of gas at an inopportune time.
just my thoughts. |

I found a spec that mentions 17 gallons, page 2 of this link.

I don't think there are many of the original tanks left. I suspect that most replacement tanks are actually smaller because there's often no way to get the original hull-shaped tanks back in without removing the liner. For example, my 29 has an aftermarket plastic tank that only holds 12 gallons.
In short, you'll need to measure it. |

Original or replacement, all tanks are required by the USCG to have a label that includes capacity. It might be worth the effort to see if you can find it, usually on the top.

Good advice- fill it to determine what it holds. I was told 15 gal. when I bought an E27 last year. Is it a replacement tank? Unknown. The A4 uses a little under a gal. an hr. so I figure from there.

How do you know your fuel level? Do you have a fuel gauge, or are you like me poking a stick down the fuel fill?
Personally, I'd trust a stick before an electric gauge. Most fuel tanks are shaped to fit the hull, and tend to be skinny at the bottom. The first few gallons bring the level up quite a bit, but as the tank gets wider things slow down. If you have an electric gauge, you may have to make up your own 'cheat sheet' saying 'gauge reads' vs 'gallons in tank'. |

Have a 72 E27 with original tank/original A4 from the look of it. Just got the boat in December. Found this hand written note on the door of a separate electronics box. States fuel capacity as 15.6 gallons and average burn rate. Found a notched stick stowed away as well. Looked to be a manual fuel tank level stick.

That's the door of an electronics box with those stickers, not the tank.
This is a pic of tank. The cable with the broken sheathing is the tranny fwd/reverse cable. Going to replace that as soon as I can find a compatible cable. Any ideas on what to replace it with, very welcome. I came across a specific teleflex cable that supposedly was compatible. Don't have the cable number at this moment. At the time this pic was taken, I hadn't tried using/testing/filling the tank yet.
Some previous owner had cut/disconnected the line from tank to carb. Thats what you see here. The guy I bought it from just went with an outboard tank and outboard fuel hose all the way to the carb as a way to bypass any fuel issues. Last weekend I used a stick to see if any gas was in the main tank. Stick came out dry. Then I put 3 gallons of gas in the tank. Stirred it around as best I could with the stick. Then I setup a fuel pump loop and ran it for 30 minutes to try to suck trash/debris out. Loop went from tank out/clear fuel filter/pump/tank fill. Surprisingly after this time where were only about a dozen tiny specks of trash visible in the filter. Removed the loop and went direct to carb, running thru 3 fuel filters on the way. Motor ran fine. Last edited by CajunSpike; 03-12-2018 at 07:36 PM. |

PLEASE find out what that tank is made of. There may be a very good reason it is no longer used. If it is ternplate or some kind of galvanized steel like mine was, it WILL rust through at some point.

Regarding that tank
We know the tank is in a 1972 Ericson 27 manufactured in Southern California. The go-to tank manufacturer for most SoCal boats in that era was Vic Berry Sheet Metal in Costa Mesa and their tanks were steel construction painted with red lead primer.

Well..Burney is either dead or found the capacity of his fuel tank and moved on.. (PO, one post March 2017).
Fly-by-nighters like him really scare me...one post..did he ever become more knowledgeable about his boat or sell it or blow it up, or still blindly out there ? ?

It is one of the nicest places on the internet. Some days I am in the mood for the flaming and trolling on other forums and some days not.

here here, check in her nearly every day. seems to be a must read for us old boat owners. that's another thing, dead threads. the guy gets on here with a real problem of a fuel tank. i mean, look at that thing. then nada. zippo. was he really going to continue to use that?

Heck, I even check in. And I am now running a diesel. For those of you who are wondering, the answer to the question is that I was attracted to both the smell and the noise. And the fact that the new boat already had one installed.

This is a fascinating thread and one of the reasons I love this forum.
The OP "took on a project" and immediately ran out of gas. After one post, he ran out of gas again. He ran out of gas and his name was BURNey. The thread was resurrected after a year of being out of gas. The OP was active here until August of last year and then, apparently, ran out of gas. I do love this place!

With hesitation, I have to ask, is it not a common practice to use a phenol novolac epoxy as a tank liner to repair boat fuel tanks?
I've used a commercial version of these epoxies on a variety of fuel tanks, from a motorcycle to a 10,000 gallon backup diesel generator fuel tank, with good results. There are a couple of companies who make retail kit versions that can coat a tank of about 20 gallon size for around $80. FYI, these are NOT fuel resitant elastomeric liner coatings, like "Kreem". Being a cross linked polymer, phenol novolac epoxies actually add strength, are more surface tolerant when it come to adhesion, and once cured are self-supporting.

Re: coatings, I offer USCG Safety Circular #79 dated April 1997. Pertinent to this discussion, look at the paragraph at the bottom of the right column on page three, Coatings
