It's a hybrid, early model engine with a late model head and cooling system.

I noticed that the head was different color, but apparently didn't take a closer look.

what is the "grey paste" on the head gasket level behind the ignitor? JB weld to seal a leak?

Looks like JB weld, and you're right... probably a leak. You can see some rust stain coming though the JBW.
