NotAnA4 won't turn over

Hey everyone!

having an issue, and i'm not sure where to turn, but hopefully someone can help?

i sold my Tartan with an A4 last summer and picked up an O'Day 272 that had been repowered with a rebuilt Volvo MD7A (diesel from the early '80s) a few years ago.

Wonderful sailing last year; engine was great when needed (waaaay more than my A4 had been, unfortunately). Boatyard winterized the motor.

They dropped it in the water yesterday, and i went up to get the motor running. It does not turn over. Not even clicking. Cockpit key operates; audible alarm sounds (normal), but not starter. Check connections at starter/solenoid, battery connections. All look ok.

- Batteries test above 12V....12.4?
- 12v tests across the solenoid (battery-connected post to other post)
- remote starter switch across those does nothing
- oddly, when key is in On position, using the remote starter silences the alarm, but does not work.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!!

Try tapping on the solenoid while trying to start the engine.
Also check the ground side of the battery circuit.

Thanks for the help. I just took a rubber mallet to it and got a click.

My batteries are showing around 12.39v....is this too low?

Thinking about picking up one new one to start from. If I can figure out if one is start and one house.

12.33, actually. On both. I think I’ll buy a new one.

Two new batteries = problem solved.

Thanks for the solenoid tip - that was a real issue. The taps loosened it up, but the batteries were also toast.
