Low speed issue - Atomic 2

I have an Atomic 2 installed in a 29 foot sailboat. The basic problem is low speed running. I have experimented with this quite a bit and am having trouble getting a consistent idle. At increased RPMs all runs fine. The choke setting for start seems to be particulalrly sensitive. It has a magneto which I believe is working properly. The engine starts and will operate fine at higher speeds.

Does anyone know how much compression (in inches) there should be? I guess it would be about the same for an Atomic 4.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.
