Why the reduction?
What is the purpose of the 3ish to 1 gear reduction in the A4 reverse gear? There must be a good reason ; to my simple reasoning it seems that when going into reverse - especially in a docking maneuver - one would want all the rpm you could get ...?

Reduction
Laker, the 1.3:1 reduction in reverse does two things for you. First you will have a smooter control of blade speed because of the reduction and you can achieve many more rpm's and power for a short period of time. Keep in mind that the prop is very ineficient in reverse as well so the additional rpm range makes it easier to control.

Are you saying that it takes more torque ("very ineficient in reverse") to turn the prop in reverse ?

It isn't so much that it takes more torque to turn the prop as that it takes more torque to move the boat in a direction it doesn't really want to go. This is especially true of full keel configurations. Besides, the reverse is achieved thru a planetary gear which lends itself to reduction.
