Reversing Gear Access

Hello:

Does anyone have experience with an assembly like this? I'm referring to what seems to be a supporting strut from the reversing gear cover to the hull.

I would like to remove the reversing gear cover for inspection purposes, but I'm reluctant to do so since the strut is difficult to access (from the left), and I don't want to create an oil leak as this is just for inspection and not an absolute needed repair. I presume it may be difficult to insert a new gasket under the reversing gear cover with the strut still in place.

It's a late model Atomic 4 mounted in a 1978 C&C 29.

Thanks

Dave

Just by looking at the picture I knew it was a C&C.... it is the same setup as on my 27 MKlll.... just disconnect the clevis pin from shift arm and remove the four bolts ..... it may require that you use a screw drive or smaller bolt to align the holes in the bracket and the cover when you put it all back together. Your shift cable wants to move the bracket off to one side.

Your picture indicates that you have good access, so you should have no problems. If it is shifting properly and not making strange noises there really is no need to go into the transmission.

David is right. I have an identical unit on my C&C 30. It is only there to provide a solid base for the shift cable. You can take it off to remove the reversing gear cover without any fears.
