I haven't yet figured out a satisfactory way to cover the hole which will be under a carpet.

Can you just remove those two screws, toss away those two bits of plywood, and replace them with a single piece?

I cannot respond to the access, others have given you that information.

The thing I noticed is the use of hose clamps... get rid of them and get stainless T bolt clamps, much better and more secure. They cost a bit more, but are worth it.
