Smoke from manifold.

Hi there,

Seems I have a little smoke coming from the aft end of my manifold.

The smoke almost disappears when the engine is idling and get worse when throttled up.

It smells like oil not exhaust. I did overheat this thing at one point. Engine has been very reliable and easy starting.

Is there a possibility that oil would be leaking from the gasket onto the exhaust side and burning? Looking at the gasket online it doesn't appear to have any oil galleries in it.

I do have to regularly give the pistons and rings the MMO treatment to alleviate blow by. The motor seems to not go through that much oil. Hard to tell when you change it every 50 hrs.

Any thoughts?

CC.

Pour some MMO in the carb while the engine is running. You will see a large cloud of exhaust from the stern and also any exhaust leak will be very obvious.

I had the same problem. ndutton let me borrow some of this and it effectively sealed the leak. It is to be applied on both sides of the gasket between the manifold and exhaust pipe.

Let us savor, for a moment, how often the opposite question arises: "how do I get my engine to STOP smoking?" A4 owners are never happy, are we!

It's easy to start smoking. Just dribble the MMO into the carb intake screen. Or, take the intake screen off and spritz it, or some fogging oil (if you have some around for winterizing), or two-stroke oil, or even regular engine oil, in there.

(I've actually never done this with MMO. Does the smoke smell like wintergreen? Surgeon General's warning: this may be habit-forming.)

It'll eventually foul the plugs, but they'll eventually burn it off. As a general rule I find I don't have to clean the plugs in the spring, having sat an entire winter after being as as fouled as I can get 'em in fall.
