Another possibility: if the original engine was replaced with one originally intended for a V-drive, the oil fill might be on the other side of the head, with a pipe fill with a cap sticking out of the transmission access plate, pretty much on the boat/engine centerline. It'll be obvious once you see it...it just won't be easy to see until you worm your way over the spark plugs.

(In other words it might not be a Frankenstein motor.)

This alternative layout is very convenient for V-drive engines, which are mounted with the flywheel aft instead of forward.
