Here is an interesting read on gasoline venting systems that at the same time applies and does not apply to us. It applies because we are gasoline powered, does not apply because of the age of our boats but is still excellent information.

The EPA outboard tanks and fuel hoses are a total nightmare
I retrofitted old style caps on mine. The vapor proof lining in the new style hose was dissolving and clogging up the fuel filter on my Whaler too
